Davao City Athletes Crowned Overall Champions at 2024 BIMP-EAGA Games

Athletes and coaches from Davao City proudly claimed the overall championship title at the 2024 Brunei-Indonesia-Malaysia-Philippines-East Asia Growth Area (BIMP-EAGA) and Northern Territory (NT) Friendship Games. The event, held in Puerto Princesa City, Palawan, from November 29 to December 6, 2024, showcased Davao’s exceptional talent and determination.

The Davao contingent secured 82 out of the 102 medals won by the Philippine A team, marking a historic milestone as the first Philippine A delegation to achieve overall champion status since the games began in 1996. According to Davao City Sports Division Head Michael Denton Aportadera, this victory underscores the city’s commitment to athletic excellence.

Davao’s 110 athletes and coaches returned home with an impressive medal tally: 28 golds, 34 silvers, and 20 bronzes. Their success spanned multiple sports, with highlights in swimming (42 medals), athletics (21 medals), archery (five medals), pencak silat (five medals), sepak takraw (three medals), karatedo (three medals), badminton (two medals), and E-sports (one medal).

The BIMP-EAGA + NT Friendship Games is an esteemed international sports competition that fosters cultural exchange and collaboration among nations in the region, including Brunei, Indonesia, Malaysia, the Philippines, and the Northern Territory of Australia.

In recognition of their outstanding achievements, the 20th Davao City Council honored the athletes and coaches in a ceremony that celebrated their contributions to the city’s growing legacy in international sports. Their victory is a testament to the unwavering dedication and skill that continues to define Davao City on the global stage.
